He Sees What You Cannot

Guidance is something we never outgrow.

It is easy to assume that, by a certain age, we have gained enough wisdom to handle most of what life brings. Years of experience do teach us, and older adults often carry deep, hard-earned understanding. Much of the time, that wisdom serves them well — until life presents decisions that experience alone cannot answer.

Then come the decisions that feel unfamiliar.

Medical choices may arise that experience has not prepared you to make. Conversations about transition follow — what comes next, where to live, how much help is needed, and when. Questions about the future may have no obvious answers, and they cannot always be solved by thinking harder or relying on what worked before. These moments come without a map. At any age, standing at an unfamiliar crossroads brings the same quiet realization: you need someone who knows the way.

I was visiting a woman in our community who was facing exactly that kind of crossroads. A significant decision had arrived — the kind that touches multiple areas of life at once and asks more questions than it answers. She had been sitting with it for a while, turning it over, talking to her family, praying about it. And she was, by her own description, still uncertain.

I asked her how she was holding up with all of it.

She thought for a moment. And then she smiled — not the smile of someone who has figured it out, but the smile of someone who has found something better than figuring it out — and said:

She was not pretending the uncertainty wasn’t real. She was not performing peace she did not feel. She was simply describing the place she had arrived at — a resting place not built on having the answers, but on knowing the One who does.

And in time, the path became clear.

That is the promise of Psalm 32:8. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. This is not the guidance of a GPS — a route pre-loaded and announced turn by turn in advance. It is the guidance of a personal teacher who walks alongside and reveals the way as you need it. Step by step. Not all at once. Not ahead of time. But exactly when the next step needs to be taken.

His Nearness is His Faithful Guidance. God does not leave us to navigate the unfamiliar on our own. He does not watch from a distance as we stand at the crossroads, hoping we choose correctly. He guides — gently, patiently, personally. Sometimes through Scripture that rises from memory at just the right moment. Sometimes through a deep, settled peace about one option that simply will not come for another. Sometimes through the wise counsel of someone He places in our path. Sometimes through the quiet conviction that grows slowly, like morning light, until the way forward is unmistakable.

His guidance is never absent. It is always unfolding. And it arrives not to those who have it all figured out, but to those who have learned — as that woman had — to hold the uncertainty with open hands and trust the One who sees what they cannot.

You may not know what to do today. That is all right. He does. And He has promised to show you.

Ask an older person in your life: “How has God guided you through a decision you didn’t know how to make?” Their answer will show you what trusting step by step actually looks like in real life.
