😴 Sleep, Stress, and Spiritual Health
A Holistic Assessment for Your Well-Being
A Personal Reflection
My doctors keep reminding me to get enough sleep. Of course, this is good for my health.
But I ask myself: Will this affect other areas of my life, too?
Yes—spiritually.
What I’m learning is that sleep isn’t just a physical need. It’s deeply tied to my spiritual well-being. When I’m exhausted, I can’t pray well. I can’t focus on Scripture. I can’t hear God’s still, small voice. I’m short with the people I love. And I question things I wouldn’t question if I were rested.
If you’ve been wondering the same thing, you’re not alone.
The Connection You Can’t Ignore
When you don’t sleep, everything suffers—your body, your mind, your relationships, and yes, your spiritual life.
You can’t pray when you’re exhausted. You can’t hear God when your mind is racing with anxiety. You can’t serve others when you’re running on fumes.
Sleep, stress, and spiritual health are deeply connected.
I’ve gathered a set of assessment questions that I hope will gently help you notice where you are in each area—and consider the next steps that might lead you toward greater wholeness. I’m not a medical practitioner; I’m simply sharing these as tools I also use to check in with my own heart and well‑being.
Maria’s Wake-Up Call
Maria was proud of how little sleep she needed. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” she’d joke.
Five hours a night. Sometimes four. She’d wake at 5 AM for quiet time with God, work all day, care for her aging mother in the evening, and collapse into bed past midnight.
But lately, she couldn’t concentrate during prayer. Scripture reading felt mechanical. She snapped at people she loved. Her body ached constantly.
Her doctor asked a simple question: “How much are you sleeping?”
“Four or five hours. But I’m fine.”
The doctor shook her head. “You’re not fine. You’re operating in crisis mode. Your body is breaking down. And I’d bet your spiritual life is suffering too.”
Maria wanted to argue. But she knew it was true.
You can’t neglect your body and expect your soul to thrive.
“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”

My Action Plan
Based on your results, what is ONE thing you will do this week to improve your sleep, reduce stress, or strengthen your spiritual health?
A Prayer for Rest and Wholeness
Lord, I’m exhausted. My body is tired. My mind is stressed. My spirit feels depleted.
Forgive me for neglecting the rest You commanded. For wearing busyness like a badge of honor. For thinking I could serve You well while running on empty.
Teach me that rest is not weakness—it’s trust. That sleep is a gift, not a waste of time. That caring for my body honors You.
Help me say no to what drains me. Help me create space for what restores me. Help me believe that You can hold the world together while I sleep.
Give me Your peace. Your rest. Your healing. Amen.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

🌙 Your Body Matters to God 🌙
You are not a machine. You are a human being created in God’s image.
Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. It needs rest. It needs care. It needs sleep.
Caring for your body is not selfish—it is stewardship.
You cannot love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength if your body is breaking down from exhaustion.
So tonight, or this week, give yourself permission to rest.
Not because you’ve earned it. Because God commanded it.
Sleep is a gift. Receive it.
