Hope Is Something You Choose to Hold

Hope is one of the most misunderstood words in the English language.

We use it the way we use wish — as though hope is a feeling that comes and goes depending on how things look. A good day produces hope. A hard day makes it harder to find. And if that is what hope is, then older adults — who have lived through enough hard seasons to know that circumstances do not always improve on schedule — have every reason to run low on it.

But the hope Hebrews 6:19 is describing is something entirely different.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

Anchors are not feelings. Anchors are not dependent on the weather. An anchor holds precisely when the storm is worst — when the waves are highest and the wind is loudest and every feeling says the ship is going under. The anchor does not care how you feel about it. It holds because of what it is attached to, not because of what the weather is doing.

Imagine an older woman sitting in her room on a gray afternoon. The week has been difficult — a health concern, a piece of unsettling news, the particular heaviness that can settle over a person when the future feels uncertain. She has been sitting quietly for a while, not praying exactly, just being. And she has been thinking about hope.

She has noticed something over the years. That hope — the real kind, the kind that holds — does not arrive automatically when things get hard. It does not well up on its own just because you need it. There are moments when you have to reach for it deliberately. Choose it. Insist on it, even when every feeling is pulling the other direction.

She says it quietly to herself, the way she has said it many times before:

And then something shifts in her chest, the way it always does when she says this. Because the act of reaching for hope — the deliberate, chosen, sometimes stubborn reaching — seems to release something. A loosening. A settling.

She says it again, even more quietly:

That is the secret hidden inside the act of choosing hope. When we reach for God’s faithfulness, we discover that His faithfulness was already there — already surrounding us, already holding us, before we knew to reach for it. The anchor was set before the storm arrived. Our job is simply to trust that it holds.

His Nearness is His Unshakeable Hope. God’s hope is not fragile. It does not thin out over time or wear away with difficulty. It is anchored in the most unchangeable thing in the universe — God’s own character. His faithfulness. His love. His promises. These do not shift with the seasons or fluctuate with our feelings. They hold in every storm, every gray afternoon, every uncertain week, every moment when the future is unclear and the heart is tired.

He has been faithful throughout your entire life. Through the seasons you did not think you would survive. Through the losses that rearranged everything. Through the long years and the short ones, the full ones and the empty ones. He has been faithful in all of them. And He will be faithful in everything still ahead — not because circumstances will always be easy, but because He is always the same.

Choose hope today. Not because you feel it fully. But because of Whose you are. Reach for it — and find that He has already been holding onto you.

• Today, try saying this aloud — even once, even quietly: “Hope is not a feeling I wait to have. It is something I choose to hold.” Notice what shifts when you say it. That shift is the anchor catching.
