Desires of the Heart

SCRIPTURE “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

Reflection

As we grow older, the things we want often change. When we are young, we have big ambitions and a long list of goals. But as the seasons of life pass, those desires often soften. We begin to long for simpler, more eternal things: peace in our minds, connection with our families, and the steady assurance that our lives have meaning.

A woman in our care community once shared with me, “Chaplain, I don’t want much anymore. I just want peace in my heart and peace for my children.” Her words were simple, but they were incredibly important. As we prayed together, I could see how God was gently drawing her heart closer to His.

His Nearness is your truest Desire. To “delight in the Lord” does not mean we pretend everything is perfect. It means we choose to turn our eyes toward Him, even when life feels uncertain. When we find our primary joy in God, our desires begin to change. We start to want what He wants for us, and we find that His plans are much kinder than our own.

God does not ignore the longings of your soul. He sees the prayers you have whispered for decades. He knows the hopes you have kept quiet in the middle of the night. In His perfect timing, He brings an answer. Sometimes He changes the situation; other times, He gives you an unexpected peace that changes how you feel about the situation.

A Voice of Wisdom.
“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” — Saint Augustine

Rest Reflection

Take a moment to think about one thing you truly desire today. Is it peace for a family member? Strength for your body? Comfort for a friend? Bring that desire to the Lord in a simple sentence. As you trust Him with your heart, you might want to hum:

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.”

Personal Prayer

Lord, help me to find my greatest joy in You today. Shape my heart so that I want the things You want for me. Thank You for listening to every prayer I have ever whispered, even the ones I thought were forgotten. Amen.

A Blessing for You

May the Lord lift your heart and your head today. May He meet your deepest needs with His perfect love, and may He fill your spirit with a new and quiet joy that lasts all day long.
