Learning to Forgive
Reflection
Forgiveness is very hard. It is especially difficult when you have carried a hurt for a long time. But it is important to remember: forgiveness does not mean that the bad thing was “okay.” It simply means you are choosing to let go of the pain so it no longer controls your life.
I once spoke with a man who shared, “Chaplain, I have been angry at my brother for thirty years. It feels like I’m carrying a heavy bag of rocks everywhere I go.” When he finally prayed and chose to forgive, he described a great sense of relief. Forgiveness did not change what happened in the past, but it changed how he felt inside today.
His Nearness is your Strength to let go. Forgiveness is often a journey, not a single jump. It does not always happen all at once. Some deep hurts need many prayers over many days. But every time you choose to forgive, you become more free. You do not have to do this alone; God gives you His own grace to help you do what feels impossible.
Today, ask God to help your heart. You do not have to “forget” the pain or pretend it didn’t happen. You only need to ask God to take away its power over you. Remember: Forgiveness is a gift you give to your own soul.
A Voice of Wisdom.
“Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.” — Corrie ten Boom
Rest Reflection
Think of a person or a situation that still feels “heavy” when you think about it. Imagine yourself opening your hand and letting that heavy weight drop to the ground. You don’t have to carry it anymore. As you breathe in God’s grace, you might want to hum:
Let the water and the blood, from Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure; save from wrath and make me pure.”
Personal Prayer
Lord, help me to forgive others because You have been so quick to forgive me. Please take away the anger that has lived in my heart for too long. Fill the empty spaces where bitterness used to be with Your deep and lasting peace. Amen.
A Blessing for You
May the Lord free your heart from every heavy burden today. May His grace empower you to forgive, and may His peace fill your spirit until you feel light and free in His love.
