Finding Beauty in the Present Moment
Reflection
There is a temptation, as we get older, to feel that the “best days” are all in the past. We might find ourselves saying, “I remember when…” more often than we say, “Look at this!” But the Bible reminds us that every single day—including this one—is a fresh creation from the hand of God.
Finding beauty in the present moment is a spiritual skill. It means choosing to notice the small graces that we often walk right past. When our world becomes smaller—perhaps limited to a single room or a specific chair—our eyes can actually learn to see more clearly.
I see this “present-moment beauty” in our community every day:
- The sound of a bird singing outside a window, a song just for you.
- The warmth of a sweater or the kindness in a caregiver’s eyes.
His Nearness is “Right Now.” We do not have to wait for a big event to experience God. He is in the “now.” When we focus too much on the “then” (the past) or the “when” (the future), we miss the “is.” God is with you. God is loving you at this very second.
“There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God.” — Brother Lawrence
Today, try to be a “beauty hunter.” Look for one small thing that is lovely or peaceful. Do not worry about yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s appointments. Just for this moment, be glad in the day the Lord has made specifically for you.
Rest Reflection
Stop what you are doing for just thirty seconds. Look around the room and find three things that are beautiful or that you are glad to have. As you notice these things, you might want to sing the simple words of this chorus from that song “I Will Enter His Gates with Thanksgiving in my Heart”:
I will rejoice for He has made me glad.”
Personal Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to the beauty of “right now.” Help me not to rush past the small gifts You have placed in my day. When my mind wanders to the past or worries about the future, gently pull me back to Your presence here with me. Thank You for the gift of today. Amen.
A Blessing for You
May your eyes be opened to the wonders of this day. May you find joy in the small things, peace in the quiet moments, and the constant comfort of knowing that the Lord is with you in every “now.”
