Blooming Together: A Garden, a Song, and a Sky Full of Wonder

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” — Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

This week, my wife Amy and I had the privilege of taking a short vacation in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the world-famous Butchart Gardens. We had heard about its beauty, but seeing it in person was something altogether different. Every pathway, flower bed, tree, and garden seemed to whisper of God’s creative hand.

As we wandered through the gardens, I found myself watching more than just the flowers.

I watched people.

There were young children laughing as they ran along the paths. Teenagers eagerly taking photos. Parents pushing strollers. Grandparents walking hand in hand. Some seniors moved slowly with the help of a cane. Others were lovingly pushed in wheelchairs by their children or grandchildren.

Each one seemed to be enjoying the same gift — the beauty of creation.

It reminded me that beauty belongs to everyone, regardless of age or ability.

As a chaplain, I spend much of my time walking beside seniors, listening to their stories and sharing their joys and sorrows. Seeing so many older adults enjoying the gardens reminded me that life does not stop because we grow older.

The pace may change, but wonder remains.

Our steps may slow, but our hearts can still delight in God’s goodness.

When Music Becomes a Bridge Between Generations

That evening, the gardens became even more magical.

A live band filled the air with beloved songs from the 1950s and 1960s — songs that carried memories of first dates, dances, weddings, family gatherings, and simpler days.

Soon the music reached beyond the stage. Couples began dancing. Grandparents smiled as familiar melodies returned. Families gathered together, laughing and singing along.

It felt like a beautiful picture of community.

In a world that often feels rushed and divided, here were generations sharing the same songs, the same gardens, and the same evening sky.

It reminded me that some of life’s richest moments are not found in expensive possessions but in shared experiences.

Looking Up Together

Then, as the clock struck 10:00 p.m., the long-awaited fireworks began.

Brilliant colors illuminated the night sky and reflected in smiling faces of every age. Children gasped. Seniors smiled. Couples held hands. Families embraced the moment together.

Standing beside Amy, I found myself quietly thanking God — not only for the flowers or the fireworks, but for the gift of being present.

Sometimes our souls need a garden.

Sometimes they need music.

Sometimes they simply need to stop looking at their schedules and start looking at the sky.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
— Psalm 19:1 (NIV)

God reveals His beauty not only through magnificent gardens and dazzling fireworks but also through the people who walk beside us. Every generation reflects a different aspect of His grace.

Young and old alike are invited to delight in His creation and in one another.

The People Became the Garden

As I reflected on our visit, another thought quietly settled into my heart.

What was the most beautiful part of Butchart Gardens?

Was it the roses? The dancing fountain? The fireworks?

The answer surprised me.

It was the people.

Then I realized that God had shown me not one garden that day — but two.

One was carefully designed and cultivated by the Butchart family.

The other has been lovingly cultivated by God through generations of lives.

Every garden has flowers that bloom at different times. Some burst into color in spring, others in summer, and some quietly flourish long after many blossoms have faded.

So it is with God’s family.

Childhood, adulthood, and old age are not competing seasons but complementary ones. The beauty of the garden is found not in one flower alone, but in all of them blooming together under the care of the same Gardener.

“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”
— Psalm 145:4 (NIV)

Watching children laugh, parents care, grandparents dance, and seniors smile beneath the evening sky, I couldn’t help but think of the Psalmist’s words.

Perhaps that evening at Butchart Gardens was more than a vacation destination.

It was a glimpse of God’s Kingdom — a place where every generation has a place, every season of life is honored, and every heart is invited to rejoice in the beauty of His creation.

A Final Reflection

Amy and I returned home refreshed — not merely because we had taken a vacation, but because we had been reminded that joy is one of God’s gifts.

Beauty slows us down.

Music awakens treasured memories.

Community strengthens the heart.

And worship often begins simply by noticing what God has already placed before us.

May we never become too busy to stop and admire a flower.

May we never become too old to dance to a familiar song.

May we never lose our childlike wonder when the heavens light up with beauty.

For every good and perfect gift comes from above.
