Walking Beyond the First Step
The Second Step: Trust
Nuggets of Wisdom
It takes courage to start, but trust to keep going. Faith grows when we move forward, even when the way isn’t clear. Each step teaches us to lean a little more on God.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)
Trust isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about choosing to follow God, even when the path isn’t clear. The first step starts the journey, but trust is what keeps us moving forward.
Chaplain’s Whisper
I’ve learned that faith isn’t a single act—it’s a journey.
The second step often feels harder than the first. That’s when doubts begin to whisper, and the excitement of beginning starts to fade. But don’t lose heart. God hasn’t stopped walking with you. Each time you move forward, even with trembling steps, you’re saying, “Lord, I still trust You.” It reminds me of that old hymn:
“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
That’s where faith deepens—not in the first brave step, but in the quiet, steady ones that follow.
Anecdote
A young volunteer started serving at one seniors community, unsure if his efforts mattered. But by showing up week after week and trusting God with the results, he saw hearts lifted, friendships formed, and hope restored. It was that second step—steady trust—that made the difference. His presence made a difference.
Wisdom Prompt
What next step is God asking you to take, even if you don’t know where it leads?
How can you trust Him to guide your way?
Prayer
God of guidance,
I take my next step in faith. Help me trust You when the way seems uncertain and my heart feels hesitant.
Teach me to lean on Your wisdom, to follow where You lead, and to walk bravely—one step at a time.
Amen.
