Walking Together:

One Step at a Time

A reflection on how the simple act of walking beside someone we love mirrors how God walks beside us through every season of life.

There is something wonderfully simple about walking.

During our recent vacation in Victoria, British Columbia, my wife Amy and I discovered that one of our greatest joys wasn’t just found in a tourist attraction but was in simply walking together.

We strolled through James Bay, wandered around the peaceful trails of Beacon Hill Park, and followed the waterfront where the gentle waves met the shore. We paused to watch seabirds glide over the water, admired colorful gardens, breathed in the fresh ocean air, and quietly enjoyed the beauty surrounding us.

From there, we made our way around the Legislative Assembly, then continued down to the waterfront and past the historic Empress Hotel.

Legislative Assembly

There were moments when we talked.

There were moments when we simply walked in silence.

Yet even in the silence, we were together.

In our busy lives, we often underestimate the gift of an unhurried walk. We spend so much time rushing from one responsibility to another that we forget how healing it is to simply slow our pace.

Perhaps that is one reason God created gardens, forests, oceans, and mountain trails — not only for us to admire but also for us to walk through them and remember the One who made them.

The psalmist understood this well.

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.”
— Psalm 19:1 (NLT)

Creation has a way of quieting our anxious hearts.

Every flower reminds us of God’s care.

Every tree speaks of His faithfulness.

Every wave whispers of His power.

Every sunrise proclaims His mercy.

As we walked along the waterfront, I found myself reflecting on Psalm 104. The psalm celebrates God’s handiwork in creation — the seas, the mountains, the trees, the birds, and every living creature. It reminds us that creation is not random. It is God’s masterpiece, revealing both His wisdom and His generosity.

Walking through such beauty became an act of worship.

But another thought quietly settled into my heart.

The greatest blessing wasn’t simply the scenery.

It was having someone to share the journey with.

Amy and I have walked together through many seasons of life.

There have been seasons of joy.

Seasons of uncertainty.

Seasons of ministry.

Seasons of loss.

Seasons of waiting.

And now, by God’s grace, another season of quiet gratitude.

Marriage is not only about arriving at destinations.

It is about learning to walk together.

One step.

One conversation.

One prayer.

One act of grace at a time.

Never Walking Alone

As I reflected further, my thoughts turned to Psalm 107.

The psalm tells the story of people who wandered, became weary, suffered, and cried out to the Lord. Again and again, we read these beautiful words:

“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.”
— Psalm 107:19 (NIV)

How many times has God done the same for us?

Perhaps not always by changing our circumstances immediately.

But by walking with us through them.

The psalm continues,

“He sent out His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave.”
— Psalm 107:20 (NIV)

There is good medicine for weary souls.

The Great Physician still heals.

Sometimes He heals our bodies.

Sometimes He heals broken relationships.

Sometimes He heals wounded memories.

And often He heals our hearts by reminding us that we never walk alone.

The writer of Psalm 110 points us to Jesus, our victorious King and eternal Priest. Because Christ reigns, we walk not in fear but in hope. The road may be long, but our Savior walks before us, intercedes for us, and promises never to leave us.

Every Step Is Known

As I watched people walking along the waterfront — young couples, families with children, seniors with canes, friends sharing conversations — I realized something.

Life itself is a journey.

Some walk quickly.

Some slowly.

Some need a helping hand.

Some pause to rest.

Yet each step is precious because every step is known by God.

One day, all our earthly walks will come to an end.

But another walk awaits us.

The day will come when we shall walk in the presence of our Lord forever, where there will be no pain, no sorrow, no weariness, and no goodbyes.

Until then, may we continue walking faithfully.

Walk with your spouse.

Walk with your family.

Walk with your friends.

Walk with those who need encouragement.

Most importantly, walk with God.

For when we walk with Him, we are never truly alone.

Pause and Reflect

What if your next walk became an act of worship?

Leave your phone in your pocket.

Slow your pace.

Notice the flowers.

Listen to the birds.

Feel the breeze.

Thank God for His creation.

And if you are blessed to have someone walking beside you, take a moment to thank God for that gift as well.

After all, life’s sweetest journeys are not measured by the distance we travel, but by the One who walks with us and the people He graciously places at our side.
