Loneliness
Are you experiencing this feeling now? The psalmist once prayed, “And now, in my old age, do not set me aside. Do not abandon me when my strength is failing.” (Psalm 71:9)
Loneliness is a hidden struggle for many, especially in later years. It can stir up fears of being forgotten or unloved. Though silent, it carries weight—affecting both emotional and spiritual well-being. According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), “Social isolation and loneliness are linked to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions.”
Story
During one of my visits, these sentiments were evident in Adolfo’s story (not his real name).
He welcomed me warmly into his residence. On the surface, he seemed comfortable, but beneath his smile was a question quietly pressing on his heart: Do I still matter? Am I still acknowledged?
To speak to that ache, I read from Deuteronomy 31:8:
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
His eyes softened, and he listened closely. I also shared from Matthew 10:29–31:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care… So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
As we reflected, I introduced the hymn “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” Adolfo’s face lit up, and he nodded in agreement. He realized again that God sees him, values him, and holds him—even in solitude.
Reflection
Loneliness is real, yet it does not have the final word. As Henri Nouwen once wrote, “When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who… simply stood beside us.” (Out of Solitude, 1974).
Scripture to Hold On
“So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.” — Matthew 10:31
Let this truth steady your heart:
- You are not forgotten.
- You are not forsaken.
- You are worth more than many sparrows.
- You are seen, valued, and sustained by God.

- Lyrics snippet:
Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely,
And long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion,
My constant friend is He;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
Prayer
Lord, in the quiet ache of loneliness, remind us that we are never alone. Your presence surrounds us, Your Word assures us, and Your Spirit comforts us. Give us the courage to reach out to others, and may our presence reflect Your love. Amen.
Encourage Others
If someone you know might be walking through loneliness, take a moment today to visit, call, or pray for them. Your simple presence may be the comfort they’ve been longing for.
