Small Habits, Big Faith
Reflection
Discipline does not mean being perfect. It simply means moving in the right direction. As we get older, our daily “work” changes. It is no longer about how much we can get done in a day. Instead, it is about staying steady and keeping our hearts at peace.
One man in our community once shared his secret with me: “Chaplain, I cannot do what I used to do. I can’t build houses or walk for miles anymore. But I can still pray every morning. I can still read my Bible. I can still be kind to the staff.” These small habits were like an anchor for him. They gave him a reason to smile every morning because he knew he still had a purpose.
His Nearness is your Power to Choose. God gives us the strength to have self-control. We do not have to do this alone. Even the smallest things—like a three-minute prayer, saying “thank you” with a smile, or choosing to think about a happy memory—are holy habits. These moments show honor to God and keep our hearts steady.
Discipline is not about doing more. It is about being faithful with what you can do today. It is about showing up for God, one day at a time. Remember: Discipline is not a “hard job”; it is a blessing that keeps us close to the Father.
A Voice of Wisdom.
“We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.” — Brother Lawrence
Rest Reflection
Think of one “small habit” you can do today. Perhaps it is a short prayer for your grandchildren, or simply thanking the person who brings you your meal. As you do these small things, imagine God smiling down at you. As you rest in His purpose, you might want to hum:
Temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh.
I need Thee, oh, I need Thee; every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior, I come to Thee.”
Personal Prayer
Lord, please help me choose what is good today. Help me to focus my thoughts on what is true and kind. Even when I feel tired or limited in what I can do, help me to be faithful to You in the small things. Amen.
A Blessing for You
May God make you strong in your spirit today. May His Spirit help you make good choices and fill your heart with a special sense of purpose in everything you do, no matter how small.
